The City of Kelowna and Province of BC have proclaimed the month of May as Child Care Appreciation Month. The YMCA of Okanagan is recognizing these essential workers who step up to make a difference by nurturing young minds every day, and this past year especially.
“After the pandemic first hit our community, we had over 70 amazing YMCA staff rise to the challenge, and hundreds more who work in the Central Okanagan for other Child Care providers,” states Danielle Miranda, General Manager of Child Care for the YMCA of Okanagan. “These caring and dedicated individuals came to work every day to provide care during a very uncertain time, and we need to celebrate and truly thank each and every one of them.”
At the beginning of the pandemic, the Province of BC recognized the need for Child Care centers to remain open to enable essential service worker parents to provide critical services our community depends upon. Many local Child Care operators adapted quickly to accommodate this need, ensuring these children were safe and cared for.
“Overnight, child care became an essential service alongside many amazing professions. Without Child Care providers, other Essential Services that we need would have struggled when they were in their greatest demand. We want to ensure Child Care teams everywhere feel appreciated and valued for the incredible work they do in shaping the minds and characters of future generations,” Miranda shares.
