A Family Connection Centre Offering

The Y&I Life Skills Program is a continuous group-based program for youth with support needs. It is an after-school initiative that supports and empowers youth in developing social and soft skills for success in education, work, and life. 

Through enjoyable and enriching activities, group mentorship, and practice, participants gain crucial skills and knowledge to help them thrive. This free community program focuses on participant-centred growth, collaboration, adaptability, communication, problem-solving, and creativity. This program is provided in separate groups for ages 11-14 and 15-18.

Key topics for ages 11-14 include:

  • Greetings
  • Self advocacy
  • Initiating interactions
  • Responding to others
  • Non-verbal cues
  • Emotional regulation

Key topics for ages 15-18 include: 

  • Conflict resolution
  • Problem solving
  • Cooking and ordering food
  • Recreation and community activities
  • Knowledge of community service workers
  • Volunteerism

Participants attend two sessions a week for 10 weeks, and family-style meals are included. The Kelowna program takes place at the Pandosy Street YMCA.

Penticton

This program is also offered in Penticton, although it differs slightly. Penticton participants must be referred through the Ministry of Children and Family Development's Child & Youth With Special Needs Workers.
